Mesa Lawmakers Take Opposite Stands On
Gender Bill |
"Saying they are
protecting women, House Republicans gave
final approval April 3 to legislation
to
strictly classify individuals under Arizona
law on the basis of their biological sex
when they were born. SB 1628,
approved on a party-line 31-28 vote, would
replace every reference to “gender’’ in
state law with “sex.’’ The former generally
refers to how people identify themselves
versus the latter which would be determined
by biology at birth." [ . . . ] "Republican
Rep. Barbara Parker of Mesa reacted
to criticisms, like one by Rep. Analise
Ortiz, D-Phoenix, who called it “the LGBTQ+
Erasure Act.’" [ . . . ]"Parker
said this is not about discrimination." |

Republicans Seek To Exempt Arizona
Legislature From Open Meeting Laws |
"A year after
exempting themselves from public records
laws, state lawmakers took the first steps
Wednesday to formally repeal requirements
they obey the same open meeting laws that
exist for everyone else. Rep. Barbara
Parker, R-Mesa, said she introduced
House Bill 2481 to “reform” and update state
laws on open meetings." [ . . . ] "The
measure, however, revises the definition of
“public body” — the groups to which the law
applies — to exclude the Legislature." |

Conservative Lawmakers To Speak At Moms For
Liberty Town Hall In Mesa |
"Superintendent of
Public Instruction
Tom Horne and other Republican elected
officials are slated to speak at a Mesa town
hall Thursday organized by
Moms for Liberty, a "parental rights"
organization founded in Florida that has
been labeled an extremist group and has made
national headlines in recent years for
attempts to take over school boards and
restrict teaching related to race, gender
and sexual orientation." [ . . . ] "State
lawmakers Sen.
Jake Hoffman, R-Queen Creek, Sen.
Justine Wadsack, R-Tucson, Rep.
Justin Heap, R-Mesa, and Barbara
Parker, R-Mesa, are expected to
participate in a panel at the event. The
panel will be moderated by Descovich, and
attendees will be able to ask
education-related questions." "Moms for
Liberty was founded in 2021 by Descovich and
Justice, former school board members in
Florida, out of opposition to
pandemic-related school closures and mask
mandates. Its chapters have since made
national headlines for attempts to take over
school boards, explosive appearances at
school board meetings and efforts to
restrict the teaching of race and
gender-related topics." |
