Far-Right Republican Rachel
Mitchell has served as the County Attorney for
Maricopa County, Arizona since April 2022. She was
appointed to the position following the resignation
of
Allister Adel and won the 2022 special election.
In 2019, she briefly served as the acting County
Attorney after the appointment of
Bill Montgomery to the Arizona Supreme Court.
Previously, she was the Chief Deputy County
Attorney, and chief of the Special Victims Division.
In 2018, Mitchell rose to national prominence when
she was requested by the Senate Judiciary Committee
to serve as Nomination Investigative Counsel and
question both Christine Blasey Ford and Brett
Kavanaugh on September 27, 2018, during Kavanaugh's
widely publicized confirmation hearings for
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United
States. She is running for re-election as Maricopa
County Attorney and is on the Primary ballot in
2024. |

Rachel Mitchell Used
Fear To Win. What
that Means For The
Maricopa County
Attorney’s Office |
"Throughout the
campaign,
Mitchell
frequently invoked
images of crime in
"cities like Chicago
or Philadelphia or
New York," implying
that softer
approaches to crime
were driving the
trend — even though
murders have
increased
nationwide,
including in Phoenix
during Mitchell's
tenure. "[Voters]
don't want that
here," she told
Arizona's Family
after her win. She
compared Gunnigle to
progressive
prosecutors such as
former District
Attorney Chesa
Boudin in San
Francisco, whose
reforms drew
well-funded backlash
and culminated in a
successful recall in
June. Mitchell had
the support of
several police
unions and some of
Maricopa County's
business elites,
including the owners
of the Diamondbacks
and the Arizona
Cardinals.
They bankrolled
racist attack ads
against a campaign
manager for Gunnigle." |

Rachel Mitchell,
Famed Kavanaugh Interrogator, Enters
Maricopa County Attorney’s Race |
"In 2018, career prosecutor
Rachel Mitchell briefly thrust the Maricopa County
Attorney’s Office into the national spotlight. At
that time, Mitchell was the chief of the county's
sex crimes division. She was tasked by Senate
Republicans to question U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings, as
well as Christine Blasey Ford, who had accused him
of assaulting her decades earlier. The high-stakes
case drew some national criticism that Mitchell, a
registered Republican, was using her position in a
partisan fashion." |
