Allister Adel

Republican attorney who served as the County Attorney for Maricopa County, Arizona, from 2019 to 2022. She was the first woman to hold the position. Originally appointed to the position, Adel subsequently won election to a full term in November 2020. However, she resigned in March 2022 amid several controversies regarding her tenure.

"Defense lawyers in three death penalty cases are asking if Allister Adel was sober or absent from office when the Maricopa County Attorney's Office pursued charges against their clients.
 
Under Arizona law, only the elected county attorney can sign off on a decision to seek the death penalty. And now attorneys are seeking records to determine if Adel was physically able to make those decisions or if she delegated her authority.
 
Lawyers in separate requests to the County Attorney's Office demanded records to determine if Adel acted personally or violated protocols in seeking the death penalty. . ."

"Five months after Allister Adel checked out of a rehab facility, the Maricopa County attorney is under scrutiny from her staff and other elected officials about her sobriety and absence from work. Top county leaders say Adel has not weighed in on some of the biggest legal issues facing the county, doesn't regularly attend county meetings and has missed key ceremonial events. A member of the county attorney's leadership team was alarmed enough by Adel's slurred speech and demeanor during a November phone call to report it to the chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors."
